Plasma is an electrically conductive gas consisting of positive and negative ions, electrons as well as excited and neutral atoms and molecules. In physics, scientists talk about the 4th state of matter. Plasma is not stable and requires a permanent supply of energy to maintain it.
Compressed air free of oil and water is preferably used as a plasma gas. Other gases and gas mixtures can be used without any problem for special applications, as long as they are not combustible or explosive even. The plasma gases ionise and dissociate through the energy of the plasma arc. Recombination of the atoms and molecules outside the generation system (plasma nozzle) abruptly releases the absorbed energy. This phenomenon intensifies the effect of the plasma jet onto the substrate surface.
The raantec PlasmaJet®DC is an innovative, environmentally-friendly process for the treatment and modification of surfaces, for example plastics, metals or glass. Modification using plasma causes the surface energy to increase multiply. The typical results of the effect are chemical changes to the surface of polymers through the direct deposition of oxygen. Tremendous cleaning effects are achieved by removing volatile components. Functional nano-layers result when using the corresponding process gases. The treated surfaces become absorbent for the required further process states, such as coating, printing or bonding. The plasma maximises the quality of diverse products and product functionalities, thereby ensuring a reliable process chain.
